Toronto FC boss Nelsen reveals Defoe interest

The striker’s former Tottenham teammate has hailed the striker as a “natural goalscorer”, but admits he is unlikely to persuade him to join his MLS side.

Toronto FC coach Ryan Nelsen has admitted his interest in bringing Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe to MLS.

The former Blackburn, Tottenham and QPR defender has just completed his first full season in charge of the club and his looking to sign a high-profile player during the transfer window.

Goal understands Andre Villas-Boas is open to offers for Defoe but Nelsen admits the chances are slim of convincing him to swap the Premier League for MLS.

When asked by TSN about the possibility of signing Defoe, he replied: “[He is] one of the most natural goals corers I have ever come across. Always out training, always trying to score, a great guy. To get a guy like Defoe for the MLS, I cannot think of many that are more suited. I think if you ask most Premier League teams, they would take Defoe. It would be incredible. I call him and text him all the time.

“Him playing in Toronto would be phenomenal. If you look around the world and try and think of a realistic player – and I am not sure how realistic he is – that complements a league like ours, never gets injured, doesn’t drink, can play high, low, scores all sorts of goals.
