Sportz – Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta expects a tough test against Everton this weekend

Mikel Arteta: Wary of former club Everton

Sky Bet

Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta admits his old club Everton will test their title credentials this weekend.

Arteta, 31, left Goodison Park on transfer deadline day in August 2011 following six seasons on Merseyside, where he had become a key player.

The Spaniard is glad to see the Toffees have not come unstuck since Roberto Martinez took over from David Moyes, whom he beat with an impressive 1-0 away win at Manchester United on Wednesday night.

Everton are in fifth, behind Liverpool on goal difference, and trail leaders Arsenal by seven points after the Gunners’ midweek win over Hull.

And Arteta knows his old side will provide a stern test of just how far Arsene Wenger’s men can go in 2014.

“Everton are having a great season and they have got great results against top teams, which is not easy.”

Mikel Arteta on Everton

“Everton are having a great season and they have got great results against top teams, which is not easy,” noted Arteta.

“It was a big result (at Manchester United), it was massively important for them and will boost their confidence, so we are going to face a really difficult team for sure.”

Arteta added: “I know the fundamentals of the club and I was happy with the way they dealt with the transfer window.

“I think they did really well and improved the team compared to where they were before. They deserve to be (up) there.”

Arteta believes the competition for places in Arsene Wenger’s side has helped Arsenal get off to such a good start in the Premier League.

“We have struggled in the last years a little bit to do that because of the numbers and injuries and now we have almost everyone fit, apart from Lukas Podolski and Alex (Oxlade-Chamberlain), that is a very good sign,” added Arteta.

“I think it (competition for places) is great. Everybody has to be on their toes and everybody is important.

“We are going to need everybody if we are going to achieve something. I think it’s a good thing.”

Arteta believes the lack of experience of winning trophies in the current Arsenal squad will not damage their chances of finally ending their trophy drought which stretches back to 2005.

“Does it matter we don’t have the experience of winning the title before? No – as long as you have the quality, the ambition and togetherness that we have, I think we are in a good position to do it,” concluded Arteta

Sportz – Yaya Toure hoping to help Manchester City make history

Yaya Toure: Remains fully committed to the Manchester City cause

Yaya Toure is happy at Manchester City and says it is his intention to help the Premier League club ‘make history’ in Europe.

The Ivory Coast midfielder has already etched his name into City folklore, having netted the winning goal as the club’s long wait for a major trophy ended in the 2011 FA Cup final.

He then played a leading role in the 2011/12 campaign as the Blues landed their first league title in 44 years.

The target now is to take the UEFA Champions League crown, and Toure says his move from Barcelona in 2010 was driven by the desire to help an ambitious outfit become the best they can be.

Toure told the Sunday Mirror: “Winning the Champions League was why I came to City. God willing, it will happen because that is what this club was working towards when they signed players like Kun Aguero and David Silva.

“With important players like that, I am sure that, in the next few years, we will win all the important trophies.

“I have come to City to make history, to achieve big things. I don’t like losing and that’s why what happened last season really hurt me. When you are so close to an important achievement and you lose out because of mistakes, it is difficult to take.

“It took me a long time for that disappointment to stop moving around my head. We are all working hard to achieve great things for City and, while it is a big achievement for us to qualify from the group stages of the Champions League for the first time, that can’t be enough.

“For us, the target is to go a long way. We want to test ourselves against the best teams in the biggest games and we have a manager now with a fantastic record in Europe, with coaching skills that are unbelievable.”

Respect

Toure has also sought to rubbish any suggestion that he is unsettled in England, with former City striker Rodney Marsh claiming recently that the 30-year-old has looked disinterested at times.

“I want to spend the rest of my career here and do a lot more for this club. I have played at a lot of big clubs, but what City and the fans have given to me is massive.”

Yaya Toure

He added: “When you get the respect of the fans, it’s very hard not to be happy.

“I have the respect of the manager, I’m vice-captain of the club. The fans sing my name around the world. When I meet fans, they ask, ‘How are you? All good with your family?’

“How am I going to want to leave all that?

“The club have shown confidence in me, renewing my contract, giving me more confidence, showing they want me to stay a long time. I want to spend the rest of my career here and do a lot more for this club. I have played at a lot of big clubs, but what City and the fans have given to me is massive.

“I have to give back. I will never find another club like this and that’s why I see my job here as being more important than just what happens on the pitch. I try to be a good example to the young lads in the junior teams. I speak to them and give them advice.

“We have won a Premier League and the FA Cup, but I want to help change the image of the club permanently, so that people know it as a big club.

“The Champions League would be a massive step towards that – the club and players are working on that. We want to make incredible history.

Sportz – Premier League: Newcastle United 2 Chelsea 0

Yoan Gouffran and Loic Remy gave Newcastle United a 2-0 win over Chelsea as Jose Mourinho’s poor St. James’ Park record continued.

The Chelsea manager entered the match with just two points from his previous three visits to Newcastle, and watched on as his side wasted a chance to move to the top of the Premier League table on Saturday.

Chelsea controlled a first half devoid of clear-cut chances – their best effort saw John Terry hit the crossbar with a header – but were left reeling when Gouffran headed in an inviting Yohan Cabaye free-kick in the 68th minute.

Substitutes Willian and Samuel Eto’o went close for Chelsea in the latter stages, but Remy hammered home Vurnon Anita’s cut-back with two minutes left to seal Newcastle’s win.

The loss was Chelsea’s second of the league campaign, meaning Arsenal could go five points clear if they beat Liverpool on Saturday.

Mourinho made two changes from the side that beat Manchester City in their last Premier League fixture, with Juan Mata and David Luiz replacing Andre Schurrle and Gary Cahill respectively.

Newcastle also made two alterations, with defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa returning from suspension and Shola Ameobi selected, as Hatem Ben Arfa and Paul Dummett (hamstring) made way.

In a scrappy first half, Chelsea came close to an opener when Terry’s thumping header hit the bar in the 13th minute.

Chelsea begun strongly but failed to create a clear openings until the captain’s chance, which came when he rose above Mike Williamson to nod Mata’s corner against the woodwork, while Branislav Ivanovic’s follow-up deflected onto the top of the bar.

Another Terry header almost led to a goal, with his effort cleared off the line by Davide Santon, and at the other end, Moussa Sissoko – scorer of two goals in Newcastle’s 3-2 win over Chelsea in February – forced a smart save from Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech at the near post seven minutes before the break.

Newcastle skipper Chieck Tiote limped off with an apparent thigh injury eight minutes after the break but that did not stop them from enjoying a terrific spell around the hour-mark.

Sissoko was first to go close, forcing Cech to tip wide when released by Mathieu Debuchy, before Remy shot straight at the goalkeeper from close range.

Gouffran had a good effort saved by Cech at the near post in the 66th minute and three minutes later, Newcastle’s pressure told, with the Frenchman breaking the deadlock by nodding in Cabaye’s excellent free-kick.

They quickly went in search of a second, with Terry making an excellent sliding tackle to deny Remy after he linked well with Sissoko, before Eto’o had an effort deflected wide by Yanga-Mbiwa.

A clever Oscar cut-back let Willian in with 10 minutes remaining, but his shot was well saved by Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul, and a follow-up from Eto’o hit Debuchy and went wide.

And Newcastle wrapped up their victory in the 88th minute, as Remy produced a powerful finish to convert Anita’s clever assist

Sportz – (Transfer) Manchester United boss Moyes open to Zaha loan

By Alex Young

The 20-year-old is yet to play a single minute of Premier League football since joining the Red Devils, and the manager has now admitted a temporary move is an option.

Manchester United manager David Moyes has admitted he could send Wilfried Zaha out on loan in January in search of regular first-team football.

The 20-year-old has yet to taste Premier League football after joining up with the United squad in the summer – with his sole outing for his new side coming in the Community Shield.

Zaha would prefer a move to Newcastle if the chance for a temporary move is afforded to him, and Moyes is now seemingly open to such a switch.

“I’ve said if I couldn’t get him a game I would look at it in January,” he is quoted as saying by The Sun. “I really thought when he came in he needed to be here for six months to see how we work. There is competition in the wide areas with Nani, Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young, Adnan Januzaj and even Shinji Kagawa – that makes it one of the areas where we are strong.

“It’s not because Wilf has not done enough, it’s because we have got big, big competition and there are a lot of players to give some playing time to. Unfortunately we’ve not been able to do that with Wilf. If I can’t do a lot for him by January then I will look at it. We’ve not had the right opportunity to introduce him as much as we’d like but he’s very much in my plans.

Richards: I’m not leaving Manchester City

The defender has made over 200 appearances for the club and, following speculation linking him with an exit, he insists he has no desire to leave.

Micah Richards has expressed his desire to spend the next decade at Manchester City, swatting aside rumors he is considering an exit.

The defender, who recently returned to action following a hamstring injury, joined City in 2005 and has since made over 200 appearances for the club.

Richards has reportedly attracted interest at home and abroad but the 25-year-old wants to stay where he is for the foreseeable future.

“I’m not leaving City,” Richards told The Sun. “It’s my club and I love it here. Ten more years – that’s my aim.

“I am back fit now and believe when I’m fit I’m as good as anyone in the division playing that role [fullback].”

Richards made his return in the 5-0 Capital One Cup victory against Wigan in September and also played the full 90 minutes of the Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich, and the Premier League triumph at West Ham

Toronto FC boss Nelsen reveals Defoe interest

The striker’s former Tottenham teammate has hailed the striker as a “natural goalscorer”, but admits he is unlikely to persuade him to join his MLS side.

Toronto FC coach Ryan Nelsen has admitted his interest in bringing Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe to MLS.

The former Blackburn, Tottenham and QPR defender has just completed his first full season in charge of the club and his looking to sign a high-profile player during the transfer window.

Goal understands Andre Villas-Boas is open to offers for Defoe but Nelsen admits the chances are slim of convincing him to swap the Premier League for MLS.

When asked by TSN about the possibility of signing Defoe, he replied: “[He is] one of the most natural goals corers I have ever come across. Always out training, always trying to score, a great guy. To get a guy like Defoe for the MLS, I cannot think of many that are more suited. I think if you ask most Premier League teams, they would take Defoe. It would be incredible. I call him and text him all the time.

“Him playing in Toronto would be phenomenal. If you look around the world and try and think of a realistic player – and I am not sure how realistic he is – that complements a league like ours, never gets injured, doesn’t drink, can play high, low, scores all sorts of goals.

PSG prepares 41 million euro bid for Mata

PSG prepares 41 million euro bid for Mata

The Blues are willing to listen to offers from abroad for the Spain international, who is concerned about missing out on selection for next summer’s World Cup.

Chelsea star Juan Mata is ready to leave the club in January as big-spending French side Paris Saint-Germain prepares a bid worth 41 million euros for the playmaker.

THE VIEW FROM FRANCE
Naim Beneddra | Chief Editor Goal France

“Juan Mata is definitely the kind of midfielder who can bring more to this already star-studded PSG side. A few months ago we may have wondered where Mata could fit in, but with the planned departure of Jeremy Menez and Javier Pastore, coupled with Lucas Moura’s fitness struggles, there will certainly be a place for the Spaniard.

“Mata’s technique and turn of pace with the ball at his feet would see him combine and complement the more imposing figures of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Edinson Cavani.”

The Spanish star started and scored in Tuesday’s Capital One Cup win against Arsenal but is unhappy under Jose Mourinho having again been left out of the starting lineup for key matches including last Sunday’s home win over Manchester City.

Mata is fearful for his place in the Spain squad for next summer’s World Cup in Brazil – and he is ready to quit Stamford Bridge in the winter as he goes in search of regular first-team football.

Chelsea is willing to listen to offers for the 25-year-old but will refuse to sell him to a Premier League rival, ruling out a transfer to Manchester United or Tottenham, which both tried to sign the former Valencia man over the summer.

Mata is happy in London and has publicly vowed to fight for his place and declared himself “happy” at Stamford Bridge. Behind the scenes, however, he is strongly considering his future, especially with no sign of  a new deal to improve on his 82,000 euro-a-week contract which runs until 2016.

“I am happy at Chelsea. I have always felt the support of the fans – in every game, on the street – I have felt the love from them. I try to play for them, score for them and make them happy. We have great support,” he told Talksport on Wednesday.

“I want to play as much as I can, but if you want to win titles you need 24-25 players ready to play. Anyone can play any game.”

Mata’s father, who also acts as the player’s agent, is understood to have made discrete inquiries to sound out potential interest in his son.

PSG is the leading contender at this stage, with sources confirming to Goal that the Ligue 1 club tried to sign Mata in the summer and is preparing to return with a bumper bid in the new year.

Barcelona and Real Madrid have both ruled out bids for the midfielder, while Valencia’s precarious financial situation means the club is unable to fund a move to re-sign its former star.

Mata has failed to establish himself in Mourinho’s plans this season, often settling for a place on the substitutes’ bench, especially in big games against Manchester United, Spurs and City.

Mourinho has cited Mata’s lack of defensive work as the main reason behind the Spain international’s frequent omission, with Oscar preferred in the No.10 role at Stamford Bridge.

Mata has been Chelsea’s player of the year in the last two seasons, and last term scored 12 goals and provided 12 assists in the Premier League alone.

What if Arsenal didn’t sell their best players and Van Persie, Fabregas, Adebayor, Nasri, Clichy all stayed?

Despite coming under fire for his transfer policy, it appears Wenger knew more than his detractors. Even with these top players in the side, Arsenal FAIL to win any major trophies and can only achieve consistent third and fourth place finishes.

His best season is 2012/13 when they finish third, keep the tightest defence in the league and score the 2nd highest number of goals. They Reach the FA Cup final in 2011/12 but are beaten by Liverpool.

Van Persie top scores for the club, scoring 32 goals over the three seasons during the simulation.

‘What if’ Gerrard had signed for Chelsea in 2006?

Look away now Stevie G. Signing for Chelsea would have pocketed you FIVE Premier League titles with Chelsea (2006,2007,2008,2010,2011), according to the simulation.

Add to that two FA Cups (2008, 2011) and two Champions League titles (2011, 2012).

Despite mixed performances for England, he plays an integral role in the side alongside Lampard in the centre of midfield and together, they are consistently Chelsea’s best players.

During the same period Liverpool is trophy-less without his presence.

‘What If’ Jose Mourinho had stayed as Chelsea manager?

Put simply, they would have WON more silverware.

The Special One would guide his side to the title in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012; three more than in the same period in real life. But loses out on the FA Cup.

He also doesn’t manage to pull off the Champions League. Best Champions League performance was a quarter-final defeat to Barcelona in 08/09.

‘What if’ Tevez and Mascherano had never joined West Ham United?

The controversial signings of Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano more than likely kept West Ham in the Premier League in 2006.

Without them, the simulation sees the Hammers RELEGATED on 41 points after finishing in 18th position. Dean Ashton and Carlton Cole’s 36 goals between them are not enough to save the team with the worst defence in the Premier League as 63 goals conceded ultimately sends them down.

Money certainly buys you happiness if you are a Man City fan. Without the Qatar takeover, the club would NEVER have won the Premier League, with a best finish of 6th in 2010/11. In fact, they remain trophy-less throughout the simulation period 2006-2011.

Sportz – From Mutineer to Magician for Liverpool

Lindsey Parnaby/Agence France-Presse — Getty Images

Luis Suarez showed his appreciation to the fans after scoring a hat trick for Liverpool.

LONDON — It can be a tough call, being the principal owner of teams that straddle the Atlantic Ocean.

John Henry solved the time and distance problem on Saturday. He watched on television as his soccer club, Liverpool, thumped West Bromwich Albion, 4-1, across the pond in England.

The boss used his Twitter feed to communicate the thrill of watching Luis Suárez net the goal of a connoisseur.

Come nightfall, Henry was made to suffer a little in St. Louis as his Boston Red Sox were beaten, 5-4, by the Cardinals in the World Series.

It was, however, Henry’s call in the summer that kept Suárez a Liverpool player when the Uruguayan had done everything short of mutiny to try to get away to join Arsenal instead.

The Arsenal offer tried to exploit a £40 million buyout clause in Suárez’s contract. In fact, Arsenal, whose chief shareholder is also American, cheekily tried to add one pound to that bid.

Liverpool’s response was that the player was not for sale — despite his public show of disloyalty, and despite Suárez’s being barred at the time from playing for anyone after he bit the shoulder of an opponent, Chelsea’s Bransilav Ivanovic, late last season.

Henry indicated at the time that Liverpool was a buying club, not a seller.

Brendan Rodgers, his coach, believed that once the player was back in full training, the irrepressible desire of the Uruguayan would make keeping him the right call. Many disagreed. They argued that, however street smart he can be in motion, a disaffected player is poison in the camp.

After five full games, during which Suárez and striker Daniel Sturridge have scored 10 goals between them, the decision of the coach and owner is looking good. “Luis. Magician” was the succinct tweet made by Henry 12 minutes into the game at Anfield Stadium on Saturday.

His fingers made the response to the dancing feet, the daring body swerves, the imperishable determination by which Suárez scored the first goal.

Magical, indeed. It was almost as if Lionel Messi had moved to Liverpool, particularly the cunning way Suárez flicked the ball between the legs of Jonas Olsson before darting around the defender and, too swift for two more West Brom men, finished off his goal.

Suárez’s explanation for seeking a move during the summer break was that, at 26, he was desperate to play in the Champions League. Arsenal is in that competition, Liverpool is not.

By implication, Liverpool’s response was “Luis, you want European soccer, we want European soccer, get your head down and get us there.”

Apart from his intricate footwork, Suárez used his head twice on Saturday. His second goal was an incredible header, powered from 17 yards and generating a speed worked out by computer technology to be 38 miles, or 61 kilometers, per hour, by the time it entered the net.

And to round off his hat trick, Suárez leaped higher than any West Brom defender to guide another header home.

Those who know the way Suárez trains are not surprised that Liverpool kept him, despite the insult of his attempted summer defection. It will not shock those insiders, either, if he turns on his magic this Saturday when Liverpool travels to Arsenal for a game right at the very top of the Premier League.

But, argue the detractors and the doubters, what about the disrespect, the disharmony a rebellious player must have in the locker room?

And what about the feelings of Sturridge, the Englishman made to run double the distance and run alone in the weeks when Suárez is, through one suspension or another, not on the field?

Well, Sturridge appears to be happy to go it alone up front for Liverpool when need be.

And perfectly content, or at least persuaded, to drop a little deeper and to make runs for Suárez when they are paired in attack.

Indeed, after the Uruguayan’s hat trick was in the bag, the Englishman took his own bow with a goal that, if it were possible, almost exceeded those of Suárez.

Again it combined instinct with audacity. Again it looked uncoachable.

Again this final nail in the 4-1 Liverpool victory made the hairs stand on the back of the heads of the 44,747 spectators inside the stadium.

Sturridge was in full flight, way outside the West Bromwich goal area, when he unleashed a shot, a powerful chip, really, that arched beyond the goalkeeper’s reach and dropped inches beneath the crossbar.

No tweet came from Boston. Maybe the owner was by then on his way to the baseball park. Maybe Henry had seen enough, and written enough on his other sport.

Possibly the nerves had by then set in.

When you invest so much in human beings, one set with the ball at their feet, the other with a club in their hands, this trans-Atlantic pull must be draining on the emotions.

The thing about ownership is that you are paying other people to do your bidding.

As the Italian tycoon Gianni Agnelli used to say when he owned Juventus, it was a wicked indulgence signing players to do what he himself wished to be able to do on the grass.

The field was his canvas. The artists had to be somebody else.

Agnelli would have adored the good, and smiled benevolently at the roguish side of Luis Suárez.

But the Italian was, aside from his skiing and his other athletic pursuits, essentially a one sport kind of guy. He could never have watched his soccer on one side of the pond, and fretted over his baseball on the other. Luis would have satisfied him, St. Louis maybe a town too far.
